David Armfield

1923 - 2010


The social realist painter and printmaker David Armfield studied at RMIT and at the National Gallery of Victoria School in the 1940’s before working as a process worker for newspapers - he then resigned to paint full-time. Armfield’s tightly painted 1955 oil, The Haycutters displays his inspiration at this time lay in the common everyday themes of Australian working life.
