Max Dimmack

Born 1922


Born in Adelaide in 1922, Max served in World War II where he served in the Signals Corps and saw heavy fighting in Balikpapan, Borneo. Upon his return he studied at RMIT between 1947 and 1949 under Alan Warren. McCulloch’s Encyclopedia of Australian Artists states that Max was “An informed and energetic campaigner for better art education in primary schools.” He wrote several books including volumes on the work of Noel Counihan and Clifford Last.

In 2006 he appeared on the ABC’s “Compass” program discussing his experiences during the war and it’s after effects on his life.
